Web 2.0
Dictionary Keyword
Web2, simply put, is today’s internet. It’s a space where you create own content, interact with others and get interaction back.
To understand what is Web 2.0, you need to understand Web 1.0 as well. And after understanding both, you will be able to understand Web 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 or more.
Web 1.0 = An internet space filled with information which you can read. Only read without any interaction.
Web 2.0 = An internet space where you can create own content, you can connect and interact with people, you can give feedback and you can also get the feedback back.
Imagine it through these examples:
A digital library: Imagine regular library. You go there, you borrow a book, you can read it, you can take notes from it. But that’s not an entirely accurate description of Web1. Because you can still destroy your borrowed book, you can put it under a table leg to make the table more stable, or you can use it instead of a hammer to pin a nail into a wall. You can’t do these things with Web1. However, when you add digital to the word library, you do the exact same thing as in regular ones - you borrow an information, you can read it, you can take notes from it and that’s all you can do. This would describe Web1.
A children playground: For this example, lets imagine you’re a child so the picture isn’t disturbed by unsolicited imagination. You’ve come to a playground. You can play there alone or with others. You can create new games or make a sandbox cake. You can be nice, or you can argue with other children; someone even can destroy your sandbox cake. There are infinite possibilities. That’s a parallel for Web2.
The word playground is very meaningful here, because you do these stuff on someone else’s place that you don’t own, like you didn’t own whole playground when you were a child. Be it putting pictures on Instagram or chatting in WhatsApp.
Web2 in Crypto
Web2 is very often inflected in relation to Web3. Many people think Web3 is about crypto currencies and finance, but that’s not whole potential of Web3. If Web2 is a space that doesn’t belong to you, but you can play there by following owner’s demands, then in Web3 you own a portion of this space and no one can force you to obey questionable rules just so you are able to play in their playground.
